The TAS Towhees, (Christian Walker-Captain, Austin Walker, Irene
Smith, Caleb Dye) are again participating in the birding marathon
supporting conservation on the Texas Coast known as the Great Texas
Birding Classic (GTBC). Each team is given a twenty-four hour time
period to find the maximum number of bird species in their section of
the coast. The winner receives the great honor of choosing where the
prize monies may be spent to boost conservation on the Texas Coast.
Although our team will be competing on the Lower Coast, if we win we
will probably be donating our prize to the sanctuaries on the Upper
Coast, to help with the Hurricane Ike damage. Past prizes have helped
with wetland reclamation, habitat restoration, and habitat management.
We have been participating in this event for the past five years. We
would like to ask if you would be willing and able to support our effort
with a financial contribution. By supporting this cause, you will be able
to take advantage of tax benefits as well as know that you are helping
to support bird conservation and increase public awareness of Texas
bird diversity and the need to protect our natural environment. Help
support the Towhees in the Great Texas Birding Classic! The GTBC is a
big day competition next spring benefiting avian habitat conservation
along the Texas Coast. Teams can compete along the Upper, Central,
or Lower Coasts for twenty-four hours to identify as many species as
possible. All of the money generated from this event, whether
donations or sponsorships, go straight to the Gulf Coast Bird
Observatory. The Observatory then uses this money to directly fund
acquisition and restoration of some of our favorite birding sites along
the Texas Coast. We will be competing along the Central Coast, trying
to perfect the route we found last year.
Our primary objective, however, is to get as many donors as possible
to donate to this cause. Thanks to Travis Audubon, we've made the first
step toward the entry fee of $1,500 dollars. We appreciate any
donation, no matter how small, because every penny you contribute
furthers the protection of avian habitat in Texas.
