Our Education Mission
Travis Audubon's Education Committee is dedicated to providing
high-quality educational opportunities geared toward environmental
conservation, bird identification, and bird-friendly habitat awareness
for all ages.
Course registration
To register for any Travis
Audubon class,
you must
contact the course registrar
listed in the course
description and receive a
response verifying that a
place is available.

Course withdrawal
and refund policies
If a registrant withdraws from
a class at least 48 hours
before the 1st session, Travis
Audubon Society (TAS) will
offer a full refund less a $5
administrative fee that helps
defray our costs. If TAS
cancels the class, we will
fully refund the tuition.
The registrar must receive
payment for a class by 14
days before the 1st class
session. If, at that time, the
class is full and there is a
waiting list, the registrar may
remove an unpaid registrant
from the roster and offer the
place to the next person on
the waiting list.

Passing It On
At Travis Audubon we
believe that teaching
about birds and nature
is vitally important.
This  way we "plant
seeds" for the future,
for the environment
and those coming after
us who will live in it.

Beginning Birding Classes

If you enjoy seeing birds in your yard and want to learn to
identify them, or if you’ve been looking for a new nature-
oriented hobby, perhaps a birding class is just what you
need to begin the new year right. Once again TAS will
sponsor both a daytime and an evening series of classes
for beginning birders.  Participants may register for either
series, and each will include four lecture/slide sessions
and four field trips.  Because field trips provide the
opportunity to put into practice the skills taught in the
classroom, we strongly encourage registrants to make a
commitment to attend the field trips as well as the lectures.

Jean Martin is beginning her 9th year teaching the
classes, which are designed to provide new birders with
the techniques and skills to help them identify unfamiliar
birds. Participants will receive a beginning birding
booklet, plus many other handouts.  Among the topics to
be discussed are choosing binoculars and field guides,
identification tips, bird biology, and migration.

The lecture/slide presentations will be held at a location
in northwest Austin. Field trips will be taken to various
locations in Travis and nearby counties later in the same
week as the classes. Trips begin early in the morning and
end between noon and 2 p.m.

Schedule for the weekday Afternoon Class
Lecture/slide presentations will be held from 1-3:30pm on
TBD...
Field trips will be on weekdays, beginning about 7am.
The first two field trips will end about noon and the last
two will end about 2pm; the dates are TBD...

Schedule for the weekday Evening Class
Lecture/slide presentations will be held from 7-9:30pm on
TBD.
Field trips will be on Saturdays beginning about 7am. The
first two field trips will end about noon and the last two will
end about 2pm; the dates are TBD.

The class fee is $55, and class size is limited, so register
early, especially for the evening class, which always fills
quickly.  To register, send e-mail to Jean Martin at begbird
(at)austin.rr.com or phone her at 343-7053.  Be sure to
specify whether you want to attend the class with the
weekday afternoon lectures and weekday field trips or the
class with the weekday evening lectures and Saturday
field trips.
