Signal Smoke
Starting with the May/June 2007 issue, Travis Audubon Society's
outstanding newsletter,
Signal Smoke, is now being published six
times per year (January/February, March/April, and so on). We made
this change not only to conserve resources (paper, ink, fossil fuels
consumed in production and transportation), but also to support our
new emphasis on conservation within Travis Audubon - we'd rather
spend the money saved on conserving wildlife habitat.

Each issue of
Signal Smoke has articles on birds and birding such
as the popular "Naturalist's Calendar" by Bill Reiner, the "Dan
Calloway report," and others. Our newsletters also include updates
on Travis Audubon committee doings, classes, field trips, and more!

As a benefit of membership, Travis Audubon members are mailed a
printed copy of
Signal Smoke. After each issue has been mailed to
members, we post it (and a few recent issues) on this page in PDF
format as a convenience for our members and guests.

Signal Smoke is professionally edited by Tess Sherman, who may
be contacted at
tsherman1 at austin.rr.com. The deadline for
publication is the first of the month preceding the issue date (e.g.,
December 1st for the January/February issue). We reserve the right
to edit content and to accept or reject newsletter submissions.

If you enjoy our newsletter, please help us underwrite its costs by
becoming a member of Travis Audubon Society. Just click on
Membership, at left, to become a member right now.

For history buffs, please know that the Austin Public Library's Austin
History Center, 810 Guadalupe, downtown, maintains a complete
archive of our Society's newsletters.

Checklist of Birds of the Austin, Texas Region
Birders from near and far, novices to experts, and children to
seniors, love our Checklist! It is a rich resource of invaluable
information on birds native to the area, accidentals, and escaped/
introduced species, along with charts that detail the months of the
year and the likelihood of spotting them, about how many, breeding
status, and general area covered by the Checklist in which they may
be sighted.

Our 50th Anniversary Edition is a handy, 4" x 7" pocket edition of 24
pp. with a heavy cover. It includes a fold-out map of the Checklist
area with the locations of 50 popular Central Texas birding locations
marked. To cover our production costs, we ask a $3 contribution per
Checklist if picked up in person, or $4 per Checklist if ordering
through the mail, to cover postage and handling (bulk discounts
also available). To order, please mail a check payable to "Travis
Audubon Society" to us at
3710 Cedar St. Box 5 Austin, Tx 78705.

What's in a name? The first
Travis Audubon president,
Bradley Davis, dubbed the
newsletter
Signal Smoke
after a boy's camp
newsletter he had admired.
The name started with our
2nd issue in May 1952.
